Uploaded to SoundCloud are two recordings of my late 80s ROGUE program that generated a midi composition. In the SoundCloud song's description "ROGUE" along with the date will identify each of these tracks from the others. My journal entry prior to this one goes into detail describing my program ROGUE, it's history and procedures in the task of generating music with this early program system of mine.

Duck's Pond 1989

Ducks Pond was generated 4 track midi sequence created on a Apple IIe, using a program I developed called ROGUE. The midi file was run using Passport's MasterTrax. The sound module's used; a Roland Sound Canvas & Yamaha FB01. Ducks Pond was recorded on a 80s Yamaha recording console with TEAC reels, master to cassette. Duck's Pond was my first completed generated composition. While the FM tones fall dead in comparison to what was available back then, I do feel that my composition does contain a rather bombastic imagery & some rather intriguing melodies created in the generation. The Chaos exists in some of the audio carpet moments where all four of the tracks are in key, but yet wandering off to their own conclusions. Like four different bugs forced together in a box. It also shows the uncontrollable side of a generated score, that IMO is the watermark to a real genuinely created generative score. Where the played scale of notes just wanders off into routines or next note choices that evoke questions to the listener.

Swamp Gas 1991

Swamp Gas was a generated 4 track midi sequence created by ROGUE. The midi file was run using Passport's MasterTrax. The sound module's used; a Roland Sound Canvas, Yamaha FB01, emu procussion module & the Korg WaveStation. Recorded on a TASCAM 1508 mixer & TSR8 reel to reel. Alesis Reverb.

Swamp Gas, was recorded somewhere between 1991-92. This track has the wavestation which helps me to place it correctly in time. Though Swamp Gas was an attempt to incorporate looping into the process alonng with the chaotic generated percussion. The generated midi notes pour out into the emu percussion module. The BASS guitar, played by a Roland Sound Canvas was a generated loop. Back in 1988-1992 I really relied on my Roland Sound Canvas' multi-part performance set up. You could set all the module's polyphony up for one instrument to maximize the tone. Through most of the 90s it became my electronic music BASS guitar. I still love Roland / BOSS bass guitar sounds found on their various modules. That is if you don't have a real bass guitar. You will hear Roland / BOSS bass guitar sounds as I move forward. You will also hear real bass. Bass becomes an investment in your music & depending on what you think bass should be will dictate how you invest in your sound. I'm caught between real & synthesized bass guitar tones and prefer them to synth bass tones or pads.
